TumblCamp FAQ & Answers.
  1. Intro & General Inquiry.
    • What is TumblCamp?

TumblCamp is a professional website theme for Tumblr. It was specifically designed for Recording Artists.

    • How much does it cost?

      $49 dollars.

It's a one-time download with automatic free updates. No subscription. No strings.

    • No subscription?

None. Once it's yours, it's yours.

Because the website theme is built on tumblr, it harnesses the power of the massive, free, self-hosted, tumblr eco-system with hundreds of thousands of fans and followers blogging and re-blogging content every minute.

    • I own my own Domain Name, can I use it?

Yes. If you already own it, using it on tumblr is free and it's pretty easy to do. After installing your theme, select "Use a custom domain name," found in tumblr's settings for your blog and follow the instructions.

    • What's this about Bandcamp?

It's our most powerful integration… and our first crush :)

Combining Tumblr and Bandcamp is the original idea that got us started. While TumblCamp is a full-fledged, feature-rich website theme by itself, if you decide to connect your tumblr account to a free Bandcamp account, you can use your Bandcamp page as The Music page on your website. Then you can host, stream, and sell music and merch combinations right from your website. Pretty powerful.

    • But what about SoundCloud?

No worries! TumblCamp automatically connects with Spotify and SoundCloud through Tumblr.

You can publish your SoundCloud tracks as audio posts, embed a soundcloud player in the footer of the website, and enable a link to your profile in the sidebar. You can even make The Music link in your navigation take users straight to your SoundCloud page, or build a custom page and embed your favorite SoundCloud tracks and playlists.

  2. Functionality & Capability.
    • Can I post updates from my smartphone?

Yes. And it's incredibly easy. You can post updates from the tumblr app, which is available for almost every smartphone.

      Pro-Tip
You can also post from 3rd parties such as Instagram simply by going to Instagram's settings and connecting your tumblr account.

    • Can I update my fanpage and twitter from tumblr?

Yep. As long as you have gone to tumblr's settings and connected your facebook and twitter accounts, you can have your posts automatically update both your facebook fanpage as well as your twitter feed.

    • Can I schedule updates to publish later?

You sure can. And it's so easy. When you create a new post, just set the date and time that you want it to publish.

      Pro-Tip
Although you can save your posts as drafts from the tumblr app, you can only schedule posts from tumblr's website. So if you're in a jam, save a draft of the post you want to schedule in your app; then open up tumblr.com in a web browser on your phone, log in, and schedule the post from there!

    • Can I install Google Analytics?

We already did! All you need to do is enter your UA.

    • Can fans comment on my updates?

Yes. If you have enabled comments, once fans have clicked on a post, they can comment on it. You can also allow fans to comment right from your home page if you select enable comments on index page.

    • Can I display posts as a mosaic?

Yes. It's one of our favorite features. If you're an artist who posts or reblogs a lot of content, you can choose to abandon the traditional full-width layout and use our custom mosaic layout instead. And best of all, it's as simple as checking a box labeled display posts as mosaic.

    • Is TumblCamp mobile optimized?

Yes. By default, tumblr websites have a mobile version already enabled.

      Also Worth Knowing
However, we aren't totally satisfied with the standard mobile version of tumblr because it only displays the posts from the home page and doesn't allow access to the header or footer. Therefore, we have plans to build our own fully responsive version so that you don't lose any functionality when viewing a TumblCamp website from a mobile device.

  3. Theme Installation.
    • I downloaded the .zip file… what Now?

The only thing you need in order to install TumblCamp is the file labeled install_tumblcamp.html

Log into tumblr and then open that HTML file. It will bring you to a new page on your browser that prompts you to fill in your tumblr account information. Enter your info and follow the steps! For a step-by-step walk-through of the process, check out our Tutorials.

    • Will I have to set it up all over again if I upgrade?

      That depends.

If you are upgrading from a version of TumblCamp from April 2013 or earlier, then yes, the improvements to the theme are so dramatic that you will have to set some things up all over again. However, you will have so many new options, you will probably want to explore them as well.

If you have a recent version of TumblCamp, you probably won't have to change anything. All your customization panel options will stay the same and you shouldn't have to set anything up again unless you have changed the custom HTML itself.

  4. Customization Panel Options Guide.
    • Color Options & Advice

      • Background

A good background color can be used by itself or in conjunction with a clever background image that fades into this color.

      • Body

The background color of the main body area should be thought of like a dress shirt. Save the outrageous colors for the tie (Link or Title text).

      • Body Text

Most of the time, a charcoal color on a light Body background color is easiest on the eyes. A soft grey on a darker color can also work. Avoid high-contrast combinations.

      • Border

If you can't find a belt in the color you're imagining, don't even think about it. Matching the Body background color so as to make the borders invisible is however, a clever option.

      • Link

        Go crazy.

      • Title

If you went all in for your Link color, maybe consider taking it down a few notches... maybe even back to your Body Text color.

      • Top Nav

Only stray from the standard colors if you absolutely have to. They look professional for a reason.

      • Top Nav Bar

Changing this color from black to something else usually turns out a lot worse than you imagined in your head. Just saying.

    • Do or Don't Options & Advice

      • Align Background Center

Aligns the uploaded Background Image in the center of the page... assuming that Align Background Left and Right have both been deselected.

      • Align Background Left

The default position when you upload a Background Image. We hate it too. Makes no sense.

      • Align Background Right

In case you feel like getting weird.

      • Allow Larger Header

Don't deselect this unless you are crazy. If you do deselect this, it will squish your uploaded Header Image to bandcamp's maximum allowed 975 x 180 pixels.

      • Auto Size Quotes

A smooth trick that automatically assigns short quote posts larger font sizes and vice versa.

      • Connect BandCamp

If you select this, the link in your Top Nav titled, The Music, will automatically redirect to your bandcamp page once you have added your bandcamp username in the text field labeled, "Bandcamp Username."

      • Display Mosaic Photo Borders

If you have selected, Display Posts as Mosaic, this adds a border around your images the same color as your Body background on mosaic pages.

      • Display Mosaic Post Captions

If you have selected, Display Posts as Mosaic, this will show or hide each post's caption on mosaic pages.

      • Display Posts as Mosaic

This is a great option if your blog generates or reblogs a lot of content. Otherwise, important posts tend to get lost in the mix.

      • Enable Comments On Index Page

This is usually only a good option for full width posts if you have very interactive fans and followers. On mosaic pages, it adds a comment button to the other options that display when you hover your mouse over each post.

      • Enable Facebook Comments

If you would like your fans and followers to have the ability to comment on your posts, Facebook provides a nice, easy, free comment box (which does not require a Facebook account) which will appear just above your post notes on each post's permalink page.

      • Enable Infinite Scroll

Infinite scroll is a double edged sword. On the one hand, it keeps fans scrolling. On the other hand, it keeps them from exploring other parts of your site. Proceed with Caution.

      • Enable Sharing Buttons

The only downsides to sharing buttons is that they increase load times and, unless you've got a pretty engaging following, don't actually get used much. On mosaic pages, it adds a sharing button to the other options that display when you hover your mouse over each post.

      • Show Affiliate Theme Link

If you like free money, sign up for free to be a TumblCamp affiliate and make a 50% commission every time someone purchases TumblCamp any time in the next 30 days after clicking on your affiliate theme link. If you would rather disable the link on your Top Nav, we understand… just wanted to give you a cut in exchange for the free advertising.

      • Show Ask Anything Link if enabled

If your ask box has been enabled in your tumblr blog's settings, this will display an Ask Anything link in your Top Nav.

      • Show Ask Anything as Contact

Select this option if you prefer the term Contact to Ask Anything.

      • Show Footer Fanpage Likebox

If you would prefer to show a Facebook Fanpage Likebox in the footer instead of the artwork you have uploaded for your Recent Release 1, just select this option and enter your Facebook Fanpage URL in the text field labeled, "Footer Likebox URL."

      • Show Latest Tweets if enabled

If you have connected your twitter account in your tumblr blog's settings, select this option to display your recent tweets in the sidebar.

      • Show Liked Posts

We know. Who cares? But if you do, enable this to showcase your recently liked posts in your sidebar.

      • Show Load More Posts Button

This option displays a Load More Posts link at the bottom of each new page of posts, which loads more posts on the same page if clicked. A particularly brilliant compromise between infinite scrolling and pagination. Especially useful if you want to utilize the optional footer, which obviously isn't available when infinitely scrolling.

      • Show Merch Link

Keep this enabled. Unless you hate making money.

      • Show Optional Footer

It should have been called the recommended footer because it solves a lot of problems. It allows the user to click on any of your site's navigation links once they get to the bottom of the page of posts without having to scroll back to the top. It allows the user to like your Facebook Fanpage if you have the Like Box enabled. And it allows the user to interact with any embeddable widget you choose to add, such as an e-mail sign up form, a music player, your recent music video, your band's bio, etc..

      • Show Post Dates

Select this if you want to display the date each post is posted.

      • Show Post Notes

Reblogs and likes both count as Post Notes. Select this if you would like to display the number of posts as well as a list of those notes at the bottom of each post permalink.

      • Show Post Randomizer

In each post permalink, the user has the ability to navigate to the next or previous post. The Post Randomizer adds the option to navigate to a random post.

      • Show Post Tags

You can assign tags to each individual post to help sort and identify them. These tags can be displayed on each individual post if this is selected.

      • Show Search Bar

Select this if you would like to show a search bar in the bottom left of the Optional Footer that searches through each post's tags.

      • Show Top Nav

Select this to hide the Top Navigation if you would like to create your own custom Top Nav by uploading a header image and using an image map to make it clickable.

      • Show Top Nav Above Header

Either choice is good. Usually the best choice for the location of the Top Nav is determined by how you choose to design your header.

      • Show Top Nav Bar

If your Top Nav is on top of a busy or multi-colored Header Image, it can be hard to see. A Top Nav Bar creates the separation to make it easier for the user to see each Nav option.

      • Show Top Nav Bold

If you like a thicker font.

      • Show Upload Source

Enabling this option will credit the original author by showing a link to the creator of each post your reblog.

      • Tile Background

First of all, don't abuse this option. If it's a picture of you or your friends, it doesn't look as good as you think it does.

      • Tile Background Horizontally Only

This only works if you also have Tile Background selected.

      • Tile Background Vertically Only

This only works if you also have Tile Background selected.

      • Two Column Captions

Optional way of displaying the meta content and captions beneath each post.

      • Use Header Image Map

To make a portion of your header clickable, select this and insert your HTML image map into the text field labeled, "Image Map HTML Code."

    • Upload Image Options & Advice

      • Background

The best background images help support the feel of the artist instead of being distracting by stealing the attention.

      • Header 975 x 180

This part's important. Don't screw it up. The 975 x 180 pixels happens to be the size of a bandcamp header. Feel free to ignore the height if you want to get crazy on tumblr. Here are some good ideas. You can make a seamless header that blends in with the background. You can upload your logo. You can add a clickable picture of your recent release in your Header Image and link to it using an image map. Or you can do all three.

      • Profile Image

        Tall images look better.

      • Recent Release 1

This artwork will display in the tumblr sidebar as well as in the Optional Footer unless your choose to display a Facebook Fanpage Likebox.

      • Recent Release 2

This artwork will display in the tumblr sidebar.

      • Recent Release 3

This artwork will display in the tumblr sidebar.

    • Enter Text Options & Advice

  5. Nav Set Up / Site Structure.
    • How do I get my posts to show up when I click on the navigation links?

Simple. To get your existing audio, photo, video, and show info posts to show up in each respective section of TumblCamp, just add one of these tags to the posts:

      The Tags
      The Music: featuredaudio
      Photos: featuredphoto
      Videos: featuredvideo
      Shows: featuredshow

      FYI
The reason we've required the word, "featured," to be included in the tag is to ensure that another post you reblog with existing tags doesn't appear in your section inadvertently.

      Pro-Tip
Tumblr has an awesome batch-editor option that allows you to add a single tag to multiple posts at once. This is definitely the best way to backlog some of your content for TumblCamp.

    • What if I want the navigation links to link to different services like YouTube?

Simple. Just add the full URL of the service you wish to link to in the corresponding section of your customization options.

      The Alternate Link labels
The Music: Alternative Music Link URL
      Photos: Alternative Photos Link URL
      Videos: Alternative Videos Link URL
      Shows: Alternative Shows Link URL
      Shop: Alternative Merch Link URL
      Contact: Alternative Contact Link URL

      For Example
      Alternative Videos Link URL: http://youtube.com/YOURCHANNEL

    • What if I want to design those pages myself?

No problem. In fact, we encourage it.

      Follow These Instructions

      1. In the Pages section of your Customization options, click, "+ Add a page," and create a new page using the Standard or Custom Layout.

      2. Choose a Page URL (and remember it).

      3. Make sure the option to, "Show a link to this page," is not selected.

      4. Click, "Create page," and "Save."

      5. In the Appearance section of your Customization options, find the section which corresponds with the navigation link you wish to redirect to your custom page and enter the Page URL you just created.

      For Example
      Alternative Videos Link URL: http://YOURTUMBLRNAME.tumblr.com/musicvideos

    • I created my own Videos page, but now there are 2 "Videos" links in the navigation?

In the Pages section of your Customization options, click the Edit button next to the new Page URL you have created. Then deselect the option labeled, "Show a link to this page."

    • What if I want a new header link which showcases similar posts?

Create a tag aggregation and add a link to the navigation.

      Follow These Instructions

      1. In the Pages section of your Customization options, click, "+ Add a page," and create a blank page using the Standard or Custom Layout.

      2. Under the section labeled, "Choose a Page URL," add your desired tag aggregation like this example:

      Page URL: http://YOURTUMBLRNAME.tumblr.com/tagged/YOURTAG

      3. Make sure the option to, "Show a link to this page," is selected, and add your desired navigation link title.

      4. Click, "Create page," and, "Save."

      Pro-Tip
Tumblr has an awesome batch-editor option that allows you to add a single tag to multiple posts at once. This is definitely the best way to backlog some of your content for TumblCamp.

    • What about my impressive bio?

      You have 3 options, really.

      First Option.
BandCamp offers a short bio section beneath the Profile Image. We mimic that short bio section using our Description text box found at the top of your Customization options.

      Second Option.
If you would like to create a whole separate About or Bio page, in the Pages section of your Customization options, click, "+ Add a page," and follow the instructions.

      Additional info:
What if I want to design those pages myself?

      Third Option.
If you have a medium length bio that is particularly important or engaging, you might consider embedding it in the center section of the Optional Footer by adding it in the Appearance section of your Customization options labeled, "Footer Widget Embed Code."

    • Why does my Shop link go to bandcamp?

If you have connected your tumblr to bandcamp, the Shop link will appear automatically and link to bandcamp's default merch page. If you have not uploaded any merch to sell on bandcamp (shame on you), then it will automatically redirect to your bandcamp's main music page.

      Pro-Tip
If you would like the Shop link to connect to a different online store, simply type the desired store URL into the section labeled, "Alternative Merch Link URL," in your Customization options.

    • When I click on, "Ask Anything," nothing happens?

Have you enabled the Ask box? By default, this option is disabled. In order to enable it from your dashboard, simply click on the settings icon, select your blog, find the Ask option titled, "Let people ask questions," and select it.

      Also Worth Noting
You can change the title of the Ask Anything link to Contact by selecting the option labeled, "Show Ask Anything as Contact." However, changing the, "Ask page title," in tumblr's settings will not change the link name on this theme.

    • I don't like the phrase, "Ask Anything," can I change it?

Yes, you can change it to, "Contact," by selecting the option labeled, "Show Ask Anything as Contact," in the Appearance section of your Customization options.

    • What if I want to show my contact info instead of tumblr's ask box?

Not a problem. Follow the step by step instructions given in the answer to the question, What if I want to design those pages myself?

  6. Theme Set Up / Customization.
    • I selected, "Align Background Center," but it's still aligned left?

Make sure the option labeled, "Align Background Left," is deselected because otherwise it overrides the other commands.

    • I selected, "Tile Background Vertically," but nothing happened?

Make sure the option labeled, "Tile Background," is selected as well because otherwise the fact that it is deselected overrides the other commands.

    • What if I want a header that's bigger than 180 x 975 pixels?

No problem. The 975 x 180 pixels is recommended if you want your tumblr theme to exactly match bandcamp. However, we have seen some amazing designs where the tumblr image was much taller than 180 pixels. The width of your header image cannot be changed.

      Pro-Tip
If you want to use a header image that is slightly larger than 975 pixels so that it overlaps the edge of the body, combine your background and your header image to appear as one seamless image by following the instructions in the advanced tutorial for making seamless backgrounds.

    • I selected "Show Latest Tweets if enabled," but nothing is happening?

Have you connected your twitter account in tumblr's settings? If not, from your dashboard, simply click on the settings icon, select your blog, scroll down to the Twitter section and follow the instructions.

    • I've selected "Show Fanpage Like Box," but nothing is showing up in the Footer?

Add your full Facebook fanpage URL in the section labeled, "Facebook Page URL."

    • What is the, "Post Randomizer" and where does it go?

The Post Randomizer is a little option that appears as a part of each blog post's permalink pagination. When you click on a post's permalink, the options to go to the next post or previous post show up automatically. Enabling the Post Randomizer adds the option to jump to a random post as well.

    • Why would I want to enable the Load More Posts Button when Infinite Scroll is awesome?

Because then you can utilize all the useful features in the optional footer. Think about it. By having a link that appears at the bottom of the posts prompting you to load additional posts, that allows a break in the infinite scrolling just long enough for the user to observe what's displayed in your footer. Sometimes compromise is beautiful.

    • The post date in the top left just disappeared even though I have, "Show Post Dates," selected?

Ok. You're very observant. Let us explain. In order for things to look nice and to conserve space, when the sharing options are selected, the large date on the top left is hidden and the permalink is turned into the post date (bet you didn't notice that). Clever huh?

  7. Connecting Bandcamp.
    • I selected, "Connect BandCamp," but nothing is happening?

Make sure you have entered your bandcamp username in the section labeled, "Bandcamp Username." Also make sure that there is nothing in the section labeled,"Alternative Music Link URL."

    • How do I add the Navigation Links to my Header for Bandcamp?

It's complicated, but you can do it. You have to combine two images. Don't worry, we have step-by-step instructions and a Tutorial.

Because Bandcamp's header is just a clickable image, you need to create an image that includes your tumblr navigation links. You can do that by combining your header image with a modified screenshot in photoshop, or using any number of online tools such as pixlr.com (we highly recommend it).

      Follow These Instructions

      1. First open your original tumblr header image file in an image editing platform.

      2. If your image is already 975 x 180 pixels, you can skip to step 3.

If your header is 975 x 180+ pixels, change your canvas size to 975 x 180 pixels, making sure that the top of your image remains at the top of your canvas.

      3. Open your tumblr site and take a screenshot of your header (or the whole screen if you have to). If you're unsure of how to do this, you can consult www.take-a-screenshot.org for help.

      4. Crop out the navigation links section of your screenshot, and overlay it on your header image, making sure that it lines up seamlessly.

      5. Save the file. Then upload it to Bandcamp.

      6. Modify our Custom Image Map (using any text editor) and Copy and Paste it into the image map text box in your Bandcamp Profile.

    • When I try and paste my Image Map into the Profile section of BandCamp, I keep getting an error message?

Double Check each of your quotation marks. Bandcamp will only receive an Image Map that is formatted exactly the way they want it. Also make sure that you are using single quotations instead of double.

  8. Advanced Theme Design.
    • What about my mailing list sign-up form?

We like the way you think. Please consider embedding it in the center of the footer by going to the Appearance section of your Customization options and pasting your embed code in the section labeled, "Footer Widget Embed Code."

    • How do I add a footer widget and where does it go?

Go to the Appearance section of your Customization options and paste your embed code in the section labeled, "Footer Widget Embed Code." It will automatically replace the middle section of the footer that displays a bank of users you are currently following.

    • Can I make part of my header image clickable?

Yes. Using any image-mapping software or online tool such as this one, it is fairly simple to upload your header image and create a clickable image map for it. Once you have done that, copy and paste that image map text into your Customization options in the section labeled, "Optional Header Image Map."

      Example Image Map Code

      <area shape='rect' coords='820,103,845,128' href='http://facebook.com/YOURFANPAGE' target='_blank' title='fanpage'>

      <area shape='rect' coords='850,103,874,128' href='http://twitter.com/YOURTWITTER' target='_blank' title='twitter'>

      <area shape='rect' coords='879,103,904,129' href='http://youtube.com/YOURCHANNEL' target='_blank' title='youtube'>

      Pro-Tip
Make sure that your image map utilizes single quotations instead of double quotations.

Basically, it's a way to make a commission every time someone buys a TumblCamp after clicking on your Theme link, even if they don't buy right away.

Chances are pretty good that you discovered TumblCamp by clicking a Theme link on another user's tumblr. Well, we've decided to offer a 50% commission, no-questions-asked, to anyone who signs up for free to be an affiliate. You can sign up by clicking on the link below.

Sign Up For A Free Affiliate Account

Once you have signed up, you can add your unique affiliate code to the header and footer Theme links by going to the Appearance section of your Customization options and pasting your affiliate link in the section labeled, "Affiliate Link URL."

This will add a cookie to their browser which lasts for 30 days. If anyone who has clicked on that Theme link purchases a TumblCamp during that time period, you will be notified and paid a commission at the beginning of each month.

    • What is a "Google Analytics UA," and how do I get it?

A Google Analytics UA code allows you to track valuable information about the traffic on your web pages such as how many people are visiting, how they got there, and where they are located.

If you have set up a google analytics account, you can find the UA or Universal Analytics code simply by signing in and clicking on the account name that contains the web page you are interested in viewing. The UA number will be the grey number in parentheses to the right of the web page name.

      Example:
      UA-XXXXXXXX-X

      Pro-Tip
If you have not set up a free google analytics account, slap yourself, then do so immediately.
